Welcome to Douglas County Connection, a monthly newsletter for Douglas County employees. This newsletter aims to foster stronger connections within our organization by informing you about important updates, community events, and noteworthy achievements across our County departments. Have a story idea? Email newsletter@douglascounty-ne.gov.
In case you missed our recent social media stories, here’s a look at what we are sharing with our online community.
The future is full of possibility—and it was on full display at the recent Douglas County Youth Center (DCYC) Spring 2026 Career Fair.
Lead exposure is preventable—and now, there’s a new tool to help you stay informed.
Scammers are sending fake text messages claiming to be from the State of Nebraska requesting court payments. This is not legitimate.
The Douglas County Emergency Management Agency (DCEMA) recently hosted its quarterly Emergency Operations Center (EOC) training on the West Campus, bringing together local, regional, and county partners for emergency coordination, preparedness and readiness.
Every day, our Douglas County 911 dispatchers and operators answer the call. From the first ring of an emergency phone call to the final instruction that helps save a life, they remain steady, focused, and compassionate in moments that are anything but. They are the calm in the storm. The anchors in chaos.
Douglas County Corrections is proud to announce the promotions of Bryan Mulvaney and Andrew Dunning to captain. Their leadership, dedication and service to the community reflect the core values of the department. Congratulations on this well-deserved milestone.
DCYC Employees Go Above and Beyond to Support Their Teams
Alexis Scott (left), Juvenile Detention Tech, and Maryam Yaseer (right), Budget and Fiscal Coordinator, were recognized Thursday, April 30th as Douglas County Peer Support Spotlight honorees for their dedication, initiative and commitment to supporting their colleagues at the Douglas County Youth Center.
Not pictured: honorees Jasha Sears and Chelsi Janicek, both of whom were unable to attend the recognition ceremony.

Maryam Yaseer (left), Budget and Fiscal Coordinator, is presented with her Peer Support Spotlight certificate by Donna Stewart, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist and Mental Health Services Manager at the Douglas County Youth Center, during a recognition ceremony on Thursday, April 30th.
Behind the day-to-day operations at the Douglas County Youth Center (DCYC), a group of employees is making a lasting impact not through recognition sought, but through initiative, teamwork and a commitment to supporting others.
The latest Peer Support Spotlight honorees: Alexis Scott, Jasha Sears, Chelsi Janicek and Maryam Yaseer, exemplify what it means to go beyond the scope of their roles to strengthen their departments and uplift their colleagues.
In the DCYC Detention Unit, Juvenile Detention Tech Alexis Scott identified a long-standing challenge and acted on it. She led a complete overhaul of the building's supply closet, a space that had gone largely unaddressed over time. Rather than simply tidying the area, Scott implemented a structured organization system that has significantly reduced the time staff spend searching for supplies, improving efficiency for the entire team.
In the DCYC Medical Department, Medication Aide Jasha Sears played a critical role during a major renovation and reorganization effort. As the department underwent painting and redesign, Sears was tasked with organizing the medication room and carts. She not only completed those responsibilities, but extended her support across the department, assisting nurses with assignments and contributing to the cleaning and organization of exam rooms, storage areas and patient spaces. In some cases, Sears completed work ahead of schedule, stepping in to support colleagues before they could begin their own tasks. Her efforts have left a lasting impact on the department’s functionality and morale.
Within DCYC Education, General Education Teacher Chelsi Janicek took the initiative to improve a shared storage area that had become cluttered and difficult to navigate. She dedicated time to sorting materials, removing outdated items and creating a more accessible and organized space. Janicek’s work has enhanced the usability of the area and provided a more supportive environment for fellow educators.
In DCYC Administration, Budget and Fiscal Coordinator Maryam Yaseer stepped into a critical role during a challenging time. After assuming the position with limited training following the loss of a colleague, she quickly adapted to the demands of managing DCYC’s financial responsibilities. Balancing the complexities of budget wrap-up with ongoing duties, Yaseer demonstrated determination and resilience — learning on the fly while ensuring the department’s financial operations remained stable.
Together, these employees reflect the core of peer support: stepping in where needed, lifting others up and strengthening the workplace through action. Their contributions may happen behind the scenes, but their impact is felt across DCYC every day.
Douglas County congratulates this group of Peer Support Spotlight honorees and thanks them for their continued dedication to their teams and the community they serve.
A commemorative purple beverage tumbler, engraved with “Peer Support,” is presented to honorees in recognition of their dedication, teamwork and commitment to supporting their colleagues at the Douglas County Youth Center.

Douglas County Emergency Management Agency’s Jason Casady and Communications Director Leia Baez served as panelists for a Neighborhood Preparedness event on April 8, hosted by One Omaha.
The event was part of From the Ground Up, One Omaha’s speaker series that connects residents who want to create change with the relationships, resources, and information needed to build strong neighborhoods. In 2026, the series focuses on neighborhood emergency preparedness.
During the panel, Casady shared how emergency management coordinates response efforts across local, state, and federal agencies. Baez highlighted the importance of clear, timely communication during a crisis, encouraging residents to rely on trusted sources, verify information, and have multiple ways to receive alerts.
She also emphasized the role residents play in staying informed and sharing accurate information, as well as the need to remain aware of misinformation and scams following a disaster.
Both speakers reinforced the importance of community collaboration, encouraging neighbors to build relationships, share credible information, and prepare in advance so they can respond effectively when emergencies occur.
